Chapter 11

It had been a few days, and there was no sign of Harper. Leonard stared at the papers in his hands; the black marks on them made no sense. Words, for sure, but he wasn’t in the mood to read anything. Even if it was the deal of the year, the project he must perform seamlessly, the contract he must fulfill…he didn’t care.

He really should care about work, instead of a woman who had fled from him, but he couldn’t do it. He sighed and turned around in his office chair, staring out the window instead. The sun was sinking, marking another day of endless searches. He had already employed all the forces he could use to look for her, but it seemed like she’d vanished from the earth. No sign of her in Orianto. No sign of her back in her hometown. Crazy...

Why was he still searching when she clearly didn’t want to stay with him? He should know better. She probably hated him. He was the one who’d been holding her captive. Maybe he just wanted to know whether she was happy with her freedom.

There was a knock on the door. Leonard called them in and turned to face the door. Dakari entered, his face solemn.

Leonard picked up a pen and turned it in his hand, soon setting it back on the desk when Dakari pulled out the chair and sat across him. From Dakari’s look, Leonard could’ve guessed his next words.

“There’s still no sign of her.”

Dakari nodded. “Yes. I suggest we stop the search. At least until after the president has left the city.”

“There’s still a week before that. The longer we wait, the less chance we have of finding her.”

Dakari shrugged. “So? Boss, your time’s better spent on something that matters.”

Leonard took an abrupt breath. How could he say that?

“You mean Harper doesn’t matter?”

“Yes. She’s just a woman. You don’t have to care about her. Do you need a reminder of how she betrayed you? You trusted her to come back, but she decided to make a run for it.”

“She was the punishment we had in place for Iker. Dead or alive, we have to find her.” Maybe Leonard was biased. He hoped Harper was fine. He understood if she wanted her life back, but he wished she would talk to him about that instead of running off.

Would he have let her go if she’d asked?

His heart skipped a beat. Maybe, or maybe not. His wolf hissed; it would never agree to that. It still wanted her around, now more than ever. Guess he could only treasure things and people when he lost them.

Dakari shook his head, letting out a frustrated sigh.

“Stop the search. You know that’s not the reason you are so keen on finding her. You don’t care about Iker and even less about what outsiders are thinking about her fleeing. I regret even suggesting we take her. I regret even more that I was the one who captured her. She’s just a distraction for you right now, even when she isn’t even around.
